Samsung HP S4253

The HP-S4253 plasma boasts a glossy black exterior and hidden speakers, and its feature set is anchored by excellent connectivity. Its image quality doesnt measure up to that of the best plasmas, however, and it costs a bit too much to compete against the most aggressively priced bargain models. Samsung has apparently made a conscious decision to make its LCDs look more attractive than its plasmas.

Flat panel LCD models such as the Samsung LN-S4051D, visible in hyperbole filled advertisements everywhere, have a friendly yet stylish, rounded off appearance, an oval base, and a wide V shape along the bottom. The HP-S4253 plasma, on the other hand, is the standard sharp cornered rectangle atop a non swiveling stand.

It shares its swankier brand mates glossy black finish and concealed speakers, which are stashed inside the angled opening along the bottom of the cabinet. This plasmas relatively thick frame contributes to bigger dimensions compared to many plasmas the HP-S4253 measures 41.5 by 30 by 13.5 inches and weighs 88 pounds including the stand, while the panel itself is 3.8 inches deep.

The company revamped its remote, improving the new model with a smarter button layout, better differentiation between the keys, and a longer, easier to hold shape.

Although it still lacks back lighting, we appreciate its ability to control four other devices. Samsungs internal menu system looks the same as ever.

We found it intuitive to navigate and appreciated the ability to choose and rename inputs from the menu, as well as the helpful information explaining various menu items.

Like most 42 inch high resolution plasmas, the Samsung HP-S4253 has a native resolution of 1,024x768 pixels.

While thats not quite enough resolution to display every pixel of HDTV sources, no other like size plasma can make that claim either. All sources, including HDTV, DVD, standard TV, and computers, are scaled to fit the pixels.

The Samsung HP-S4253 has all the conveniences we expected, including an ATSC tuner to receive over the air digital and HDTV stations, although it lacks CableCard no big loss in our book. Theres a picture in picture option with side by side and inset views an average selection of aspect ratio controls (four for standard definition and two for HD sources) and a freeze feature to capture on screen phone numbers, for example.

We also appreciate the solid selection of picture affecting features, although we would have preferred the Samsung HP-S4253 to have true independent input memories. However, there are four adjustable picture modes Dynamic, Movie, Standard, and Custom. Since the set reverts to the last selected picture mode when you switch inputs, its possible to set up four of the TVs inputs separately for different sources.

Samsung includes a separate game mode, which increases color saturation, edge enhancement, and overall brightness for a more vibrant, less realistic look that some gamers might prefer. Fortunately, Samsungs DNIe processing, which introduces more edge enhancement, is defeat able (in Movie mode, you cant even turn it on), whereas with the LN-S4051D, you cant turn it off.

Samsung SC X300

Friday, March 28, 2014

Video cameras using a memory card format are able to achieve an ultra compact design.

Because they record highly compressed video, theyre best suited for gadget lovers who want to use their footage mainly on Web sites and in email.

Digital camcorders that record MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 to memory cards may be picky about the cards you use since those encoding schemes require the ability to write to the card more quickly than most standard cards can handle.

Allows for very compact camcorders. Easy searching and random access to video segments.

Selectable image quality levels, including high quality variable bit rate recording. Both video and still images are recorded on disc (instead of on a cassette and a memory card). Relatively short recording times. Video is highly compressed.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y730

Home users are increasingly turning to notebook computers as their primary PCs, as they like that laptops can offer similar performance and features to those of a desktop PC, and can be easily moved from room to room. Though of course almost any notebook computer will do for typical home use, there are two types of laptops most suitable for home users middle size notebooks, which tend to be budget friendly, and desktop replacements, which are usually packed with features.

To maximize battery life, notebook computer processors are often designed to save more energy and run cooler than desktop processors.

The drawback is slower performance, but more memory can help, which it wont consume energy or radiate heat.

Even better, up to 4GB of RAM can now be found in budget configurations. If you want more memory later, expansion is often a simple procedure.

The central processor (CPU) is the heart of any computer system and an excellent litmus test as to whether a desktop computer or notebook fits your needs. The trouble is, processor names like Athlon and Celeron are as cryptic as system names like Latitude and Pavilion.

Dell G2410

Wednesday, March 26, 2014

The 24 inch Dell G2410 is plainly designed with angular features and a black matte finish. The bezel measures a short 0.75 inch long on all sides and the middle of the bottom bezel has a slightly raised silver Dell logo on it. The panel is nearly 1 inch deep (In comparison, most 24 inch models weve tested have a panel depth of more than an inch) however, the back of the display which houses the backlight, connection options, and ventilation system extends another 1.5 inches, bringing the full monitor depth to about 2.4 inches.

The panel width measures 22.4 inches long average for a monitor of this screen size. The rectangular footstand measures 10.75 inches in width, with a depth of 6.1 inches. The footstand is a short 0.5 inch tall. We saw only minimal wobbling when we knocked the display from the sides, but with such a long and flat footstand, youd really have to knock it hard before it toppled.
The bottom of the bezel sits about 2.75 inches from the desktop, but unfortunately, this screen height is neither adjustable nor is there a screen rotation or pivot option useful if you prefer portrait mode.

The capability to tilt the screen back 25 degrees is the only ergonomic feature included. To keep the price and energy footprint down, Dell only includes DVI and VGA as connection options. Youre out of luck if you want to connect an external Blu-ray player, since there is no HDMI which is a mainstay on most monitors this size. The most improved feature of the Dell G2410 is its on screen display.

The OSD follows Dells recent stellar, labelless design last seen in the SP2309W and S2409W. This OSD, however, is even simpler and easier to use with more features. Four buttons line the lower right hand corner of the bezel. Pressing any of the buttons brings up the OSD, which pops up parallel to the button array, each option corresponds to one of the four buttons. Once a new menu comes up, the function of the buttons change dynamically, as the top two buttons become the up and down arrow buttons used to navigate though the newly seen menu.

Since any button labels for the OSD are actually on the screen, calibrating the display in a dark room proved painless. Pressing the button next to "Energy Modes" on the OSD brings up a menu for choosing three different modes that determine your monitors energy footprint. Choosing Standard lets the user manually set the displays brightness. Energy Smart activates the ambient light sensor and caps the screen brightness at 66 percent.

The ambient light sensor will adjust the brightness based on the level of light in the room the lower the ambient light level, the lower the brightness automatically adjusts. Energy Smart Plus is identical to Energy Smart, but adds dynamic dimming, which automatically dims the backlight when the screen shows an image that is overly bright or all white. As you change options that affect your energy footprint brightness, the three energy modes youll see an Energy Gauge in the OSD.

The gauge is a meter that dynamically changes based on how much power your monitor is consuming. Take your brightness to full and the gauge goes into the red. Bring the brightness back down and your gauge responds by turning green. Ultimately, the Energy Gauge is not that useful, as it depends primarily on your monitors current brightness level however, this is a welcome first step and wed like to see Dell and other vendors continue to develop its usefulness.

Aside from the energy mode options, OSD options include the mainstays brightness, contrast, and various color options. The presets are separated into two categories Graphics and Video. There are six Graphics presets to choose from: Standard, Multimedia, Game, Warm, Cool, and, of course, Custom. The movie presets are Movie, Game, Sports and Nature. The presets do not change anything other than the Red, Green, and Blue color balance and therefore how well each setting works will be subjective.

Also, there are options to adjust the hue and color saturation in addition to options like setting the OSD to stay on screen up to a minute useful for anyone who will spend a good amount of time calibrating. The Dell G2410s 16:9 aspect ratio supports a "Full HD" 1.920x1,080 pixel native resolution. This continues the trend of more and more monitor vendors moving toward 16:9 from 16:10 because high definition content in particular 1080p movies can fit onto a 1.920x1.080 pixel screen without distorting the image.

New Android UI Shows iPhone like Animations

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

New Android snapshotThe first iteration of Android wasnt the prettiest phone OS by a longshot. However, todays release of the refreshed Android SDK shows a UI that has more than a bit of polish. Good on smooth, animated transitions.

Some have speculated thats where most of the iPhones charm comes from.

Dell Inspiron Mini 9

While component wise, the Mini 9 is similar to other recent Netbooks, such as the Eee PC 901 and the Acer Aspire One (which all use Intels Atom CPU), in typical Dell fashion, there are more customization options than weve seen other Netbooks. Our test unit arrived with 1GB of RAM, a 16GB solid state hard drive, and Windows XP.

That configuration costs $514 and comes very close to hitting the benchmarks we set out in our "Building the Perfect Netbook" feature, which asked for similar components, but maybe a slightly bigger SSD hard drive and an impulse purchase $499 price tag. You can get the Inspiron Mini 9 down to as low as $349 by opting for a smaller hard drive (4GB or 8GB), 512MB of RAM, an Ubuntu Linux OS, or knocking down the Webcam to a lower resolution option.

Or, add few bucks for the option internal Bluetooth antenna, which wasnt in our build (but is useful for tethering a cell phone for mobile broadband access). As an interesting note, the Mini 9 apparently includes an inactive internal mobile broadband antenna. According to Dell, it will be announcing the carrier and coverage details in the coming weeks.

Specification
  • Price as reviewed / Starting price $514/349
  • Processor Intel Atom 1.6GHz
  • Memory 1024MB DDR2 SDRAM 533MHz
  • Hard drive 16GB SSD
  • Chipset Intel GMA950
  • Graphics Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset (integrated)
  • Operating system Windows XP Home Edition SP2
  • Dimensions (width by depth) 9.1x6.8 inches
  • Thickness 1.25-1.1 inches
  • Screen size (diagonal) 8.9 inches
  • System weight / Weight with AC adapter 6.2/6.9 pounds
  • Category Netbook
In person, the Mini 9 is similar in design to Asus 9 inch Eee PC. Its slightly thinner, at about 1.25 inches at the back, tapering slightly toward the front. Our system had a glossy black finish (which is very fingerprint prone), and white is also available. Interestingly, most of the leaked product shots weve seen up to now show a red model.

The challenge for any Netbook is to squeeze as much keyboard as possible into a very tiny space, and the Mini 9 does a good job with it. The Dell letter keys are larger than on the 9 inch Eee PC, but certain keys Tab, Caps Lock, and so on are reduced to small slivers. In addition, the entire function key row has been removed. F1 through F10 are now alternate keys of the A to L row.

Its an interesting compromise to get the most surface area for everyday typing, but makes some tasks, such as jumping between Web page fields with the Tab key, somewhat awkward. Opening the lid, the 8.9 inch 1,024x600 pixel screen shares space with a Webcam above and two small speaker grilles below. The display offers just enough space for displaying Web pages and Word documents, and we think the 9 inch size is the perfect fit for Netbooks, rather than the smaller 7 inch or larger 10 inch screens on other systems.

Skinning Android Good Diversity or Harmful to User Experience

Monday, March 24, 2014

Sony, LG, HTC, Motorola and Samsung all have their builds of Android. Some are loved and some are hated, each with their own pros and cons.

However does the additional features of any of them keep you loyal to one brand !? Im sure in the case of some Samsung users they like to keep all the tricks TouchWiz gives them at the expense of an extra few gig of storage being chewed up. As Motorola found out, over skinning (yes Im talking about MotoblahBlur) can really impact a handsets ability to get its point across, you know being a smartphone.

After trying out TouchWiz for a number of months on a S3, I couldnt help but think the unit is over engineered, a fate a the similar LG G2 UI has although thats slightly closer to stock than TouchWiz is - but it still suffers. You play with the extra features for a short while but eventually turn off eye tracking because lets face it - its annoying. Changing the text bubbles is an option but finding one thats close to a classic text screen is near impossible. As for ringtones, doesnt anyone like ringring any more ?! If you do then you have to look hard for one, the LG G2 did have the worst default ringtone since the hearing DRRROOOIIIDDDD at 200dbs from a RAZR of some sort. Samsung and LG have their own app stores and Sony have their own Playstation Store too as well as Select, not to mention their own backing up software.

Humm doesnt Google do all that for you ?! Why re-invent the wheel, oh we know, money. It seems that skinning has potential for a fork, something Samsung are desperate to do with Tizen, Amazon have done so but by doing so and not allowing Google to make a few quid they risk the whole Android platform. As hardware vendors, maybe they can just jump onto the biggest ship thats open source at the time but the only reason I would buy from one of the vendors is because Im using a universal store than I can use on all devices. Therefore forking is bad, the same can be said for Cyanogenmod, while an interesting project - it does have draw backs. Google have asked their apks are not included in any build of the free ROM.  A shame when this ROM mod can breathe new life into old abandoned handsets, still a forks a fork.

Anyway I digress, skinning, yes you can buy a handset with stock Android in form of a Nexus 4/5 but since vendors like to add something to make the handset standout, should it be small additions in software UI ? No, Id rather they stick to hardware changes because thats their business. I couldnt care less Sony change the grouping of icons into a box rather than the stock circle, something LG have done and it looks ugly. Stick to stock and add special hardware features. Apple have added features over the years but they have all been at an OS level, rather than part of a skin, Googles Android more than kills that with stock, so what can possibly be added to make Android more attractive - not by adding junk thats for sure. Id prefer a shift to more stock, and leaving the special stores off the handsets no more LG World, no more Sony Select, no more Samsung App Planet of the Apes.

Without crazy skins, then lag, updates to OS will come quicker as testing for each handset will be greatly reduced.

JVC Everio GZ MG730

With a design closely matching the rest of the Everio G series camcorders, the MG730 is a coat pocket size 2.8 inches wide by 2.7 inches high by 4.7 inches deep thats only slightly larger than JVCs Everio GZ-MS100 microSD card based camcorder. Thats impressive considering it has a 30GB hard drive as well as a microSD slot for storing both video and still images.

It weighs 12.8 ounces with its 1460mAh battery thats rated for up to 2.5 hours of recording (it averaged closer to 2 hours in my testing). The main controls are well placed.

A thumb reachable dial surrounding the record button on back changes modes, which include six scene options, Auto, Manual (Program AE), and Shutter and Aperture Priority all of them work for both video and still images.

The battery takes up most of the rest of the back, though above it is a switch for changing from video to still shooting. On top are the zoom rocker and a snapshot button. You cannot take stills while shooting video. Notably missing are external mic and headphone jacks.

Flip open the 2.7 inch LCD to access buttons on the body for jumping from record to playback, turning on the built in neutral density filter (which decreases light transmission to allow for slower shutter speeds in bright light), a power button, and Direct DVD and Direct Back Up buttons. You can also set the MG730 to power on when the LCD is opened.

Sony NWZ B135F

Sunday, March 23, 2014

Features come and go in the rapidly evolving MP3 player space. One that has enjoyed fluctuating popularity is the built in USB interface, which allows a device to connect directly to a computer without a cable. This "plug and play" capability is currently out of fashion, but Sony is trying to keep the dream alive with the B-Series Walkman.

The entry level offering is aimed at active users and is priced competitively at $44.99 for the 1GB model and $59.99 for the 2GB. Battery life isnt as impressive as other Sony Walkmans and the screen is tiny, but the B-Series hits the mark with an array of features suitable for on the go use.

The Sony B-Series Walkman is slightly larger than your average thumb drive, measuring 3.5 inches long by 0.8 inch wide by 0.5 inch thick, which makes it ultra portable and suitable for just about any pocket.

It comes in a variety of colors black, pink, red (2GB only), and blue (1GB only) which align rather well with the typical gym clothing palette. The USB interface is concealed beneath a removable cap at one end of the device, while a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack is bored into the other.

The main playback controls sit on the face and consist of a play or pause button, track forward and reverse keys, and a back button. Sony includes a variety of dedicated controls on the top edge of the player, including a record key, a volume toggle, and a bass boost button. The necessary hold switch is housed alone on the bottom spine.

VAIO TZ with 64GB SDD 250GB HDD gets a ship date

Vaio TZ demoSomewhat lost in Sonys massive CES VAIO spec bump was an update to the super hot (but generally overlooked) top-end VAIO TZ that features both an SSD and HDD, which allows you to speed up booting and other system tasks that rely on quick random reads by running Windows off the SSD while still being able to lug all your data around on the traditional hard drive. The no-compromises model got bumped to 64GB of SSD and 250GB of HDD, up from 32 and 160, but we didnt know a ship date until now -- looks like Sonys taking preorders now on sonystyle.com for delivery in March.

The new model also includes 2GB of RAM, a Sprint EV-DO card, fingerprint sensor, and external dual-layer burner, as well as the TZs usual 11.1-inch XBRITE screen and 1.33GHz U7700 Core 2 Duo processor.

How can i get my ipod touch 2g to connect via bluetooth to my Nokia n95 cellphone

Saturday, March 22, 2014

Q. Ive tried celeste, but it told me something about how my phone doesnt have OBEX push profile capability or its not turned on. Showing me how to fix that would be best (because I already set it up), but Im open to other methods. Oh and my ipod is jailbroken.

A. u cant, sorry. Ipods, iphones, etc, are only allowed to bluetooth to each other, no other brands, and unfortunately theres nothing u can do to change that, even if ur device is jailbroken.

How do u play ipod through a computer different computers itunes?
Q. When I plug in the ipod I can see the songs in like a grey font. How do I make it so that I can play them?
ive done what u said and they wont play
i was thinking theres a setting i need to change or something

A. You can only access the music from your iPod from your own music library unless you change a setting to manual sync. Manual sync lets you put songs from other peoples iTunes library into you own iPod. It also allows you to listen to the music on your iPod on other peoples computers.

To change your iPod settings to manual sync you:

Plug in iPod/Open iTunes/Go on your devices tab [left hand side] and click your iPod/Tick manual sync.

It may say it will wipe things that are currently on your iPod but hopefully it wont.

Hope that helps x

How do you connect an ipod to a ipod compatible car?
Q. My 2007 Suzuki Forenza is ipod compatible but i dont know how to do it.

A. Your Ipod or other music player should have a adapter cable that plugs into the 1/8" mini jack in the front of the radio. Rest of the details or in your owners manual.

Road Rash Returns Rumours

Friday, March 21, 2014

Road rash returns demoElectronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has been dropping some none-too-subtle hints that the company is interested in another Road Rash. He name-checked the bloody motorcycle racing classic at DICE during his talk and recently in a GameDaily interview in an attempt to, we assume, get gamers misty-eyed with nostalgia for the franchise.

He let slip in a recent interview with the Classic Metal Show that he had just recently licensed one of his tracks to the game. Well, he comes close enough for us to get a bit excited, saying of the tune "You Dont Understand" from his recent album "Its a super heavy song. That just got picked up for some video game, Road Rage or Road Rash, or something like that." Obviously, Bach is not a die hard gamer.

It wouldnt be the first time an aging musical outfit had peeped when they maybe shouldnt have. Queens of the Stone Age and Aerosmith both pre-announced some news last year about Rock Band and a pair of Guitar Hero games. Were just guessing that Bach doesnt know that publishers like to keep these things under wraps until the very last second.

Weve contacted sources at EA for clarification on the rumor, but they have yet to get back to us.

Thanks for the heads up, Dave.

Update: EA got back to us with the following statement: "Though CEO John Riccitiello has recently mentioned it as a classic, beloved EA franchise, Road Rash is not currently in development." Is Sebastian Bach just confused or a dirty, dirty liar?

What are some tricks that my iPhone 5 can do

Q. I got a new iPhone 5 for christmas (lucky me!) and I want to know some hidden tricks it can do. Nothing to do with jailbreaking, though.

A. Panorama (Camera app), Simultaneously take photos while shooting video (Camera app), Siri has a lot of new features, Flyover in the built-in maps app is cool (But, not recommended for directions), Facetime over LTE or Cellular, Assistive touch (Settings>General>Accessibility>Assistive Touch), Change what happens when you triple click the home button (Settings>General>Triple Click). Also just try exploring the settings. Thats how I found most of these

Where is the cheapest place to buy an iphone 5?
Q. I currently own an Iphone 3gs, but after about 2 years, its time for an upgrade. I was wondering if I could go someplace cheaper. I already have a plan, but my 2 year contract is almost up. I heard Walmart would give an IPhone for $127. Is this true? If not, what other places can I go to to get a cheaper Iphone 5?

A. In a way it depends on which carrier you are with already.

T-Mobile starts at $99 & AT&T, Verizon & Sprint start at $199 for the 16GB.

Why is the iphone 5 more expensive here in Australia?
Q. Outright purchase of the iphone 5 64gb in Australia costs $999 whereas the U.S sells it for $399. Why exactly is this a huge difference considering that our currency is fairly close?

A. The $399 is the subsidized price when you get the phone along with a 2 year contract. So the cost of the 64GB should be lower if you get a 2 year plan when you get the phone. I dont know how the phone plan in Australia is like but its this way in the US. If you dont get the phone at a subsidized price, you can get it at full price which is $849 (I think) for the 64GB in the US. If your price is higher over there, maybe its the air shipping or something else because your country is importing the phone (thats what I think).

Geist Projecter U Can Call It T BALL

Amazing Geist Projector (T-BALL)

T-Ball Geist ProjectorWhile projectors traditionally use lenses to offset the throw of the image the floating ball can rise or fall in space to make projection even more flexible. Plus, the projector is not just a projector but a series of micro projectors, allowing users to display multiple images to and from multiple angles. So you can watch the latest Power Rangers on one wall while you pretend to watch CNN on another.

Of course, by the time micro projectors are good enough for home theater use; well probably all have HD imaging paints anyway and just cover our walls with electronic wallpaper.

iPhone 5 v HTC One head to head video review

Monday, March 17, 2014

The Samsung Galaxy S4 launch is just over a week away but the firm faces some tough competition from rivals on the market. The chief challengers are the HTC One and the Apple iPhone 5.
The HTC One was unveiled in February and is currently the top Android handset on the market featuring a number of custom camera and software innovations that make it entirely unique and original.
Meanwhile the iPhone 5 is Apples current flagship smartphone. Released late last year, despite being midway through its product life cycle, the device is still viewed as the benchmark by which many people judge and compare any new smartphone.

Lenovo Sony in talks for PC business alliance Report

Japans Sony Corp and Chinese technology company Lenovo Group are in talks about a possible joint venture to take over Sonys loss-making Vaio PC business overseas, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported on Saturday.

The Japanese electronics and media giant called the report inaccurate while acknowledging that it was looking at various possibilities for the unit.

"Sony continues to address various options for the PC business, but the press report on a possible PC business alliance between Sony and Lenovo is inaccurate," the company said in a statement.

Sony has said it plans to revise its product and manufacturing strategy for the Vaio unit as it faces a slump in its PC business, hit by the popularity of smartphones and tablets.

Sony, which will release results next week, had previously predicted its PC business would be in the red for the year to end-March, without disclosing figures.

Moodys Investors Service cut Sonys debt rating to junk status last week, highlighting challenges in its television and PC businesses and pressure on profitability at its entire core consumer electronics operation.

Lenovo earns about 80 percent of its revenue from personal computers but has been aggressively diversifying into more promising markets.

Last week, Lenovo said it would buy Google Incs Motorola Mobility handset unit for $2.91 billion, the fourth-largest U.S. acquisition by a Chinese or Hong Kong company ever, to face off against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Apple Inc in the smartphone market.

The skys almost the limit! High CPU is no more

Sunday, March 16, 2014

Were very excited today to announce that weve raised limits on several App Engine operations:

  • No more "High CPU Requests"! App Engine Apps were once allowed no more than 2 CPU-intensive requests per minute. Weve made some adjustments to the way we handle requests, and have eliminated this limitation altogether. To learn more about how this works and the implications for your app, see our documentation.

  • Response deadline raised to 30 seconds. The amount of time an App Engine app can take to respond to an incoming request has been raised from 10 to 30 seconds! There are limits on the number of simultaneous active requests an application can process at any given moment--see our docs to learn more.

  • Size limits on code files, static files, and requests/responses raised to 10MB! App Engine apps can now receive requests and send responses of up to 10MB in size, and users can upload 10MB code and static files as well. Note that API requests (e.g. memcache.set(), db.put()) are still limited to 1MB in size.

These changes were inspired and driven by a great deal of developer feedback, and were not done! Please let us know what youd like to see next on App Engine in our Google Group!

Download iPad Apps from Office and Install from Home

Saturday, March 15, 2014

Scenario: I am an iPad Wifi (no 3G) owner. I bring my iPad to work every day. My work place do not have open  Wifi, so I am unable to connect iPad to the Internet. I use the office computer and find free iPad apps, but these iPad apps are free only for a very limited time. By the time I return home, the apps are no longer free. I do not want to plug my iPad to my office computer iTunes because I do not want my office computer to sync all the apps in my iPad.

My solution: I install iTunes on my office computer. I login using my Apple ID. I download the apps from my office computer via iTunes. I copy the .IPA app files to my USB drive. I bring the files home. I open the iTunes from my home computer. I drag and drop the .IPA app files from my USB drive to iTunes. I sync my iPad in iTunes. The apps will appear in my iPad.

Yes it might be a longwinded way of getting apps into your iPad, but it is an effective way of getting the free apps that are often offered in very limited time frame. You will save time by downloading huge apps from office. And if you are like me who tethers my iPad to my mobile device (Nokia E72 via Joikuspot Premium), it might be a good idea to save the monthly bundled data. 1GB might seem a lot, but if each app size is 100MB, 10 downloads would deplete your monthly quota. And did I mention the battery drain when using your mobile device as a Wifi hotspot?

To find the folder that stores the .IPA app files, go to the iTunes Apps library that displays all your installed apps, then right click any app and select "Show in Windows Explorer".

Oh, and you can only install the .IPA app file on devices with the same Apple ID. So you cant share the .IPA file with your friends. iTunes will not allow the app to be installed in devices with a different Apple ID.

Datastore Performance Growing Pains

Friday, March 14, 2014

As many of you know, App Engine’s Datastore performance has been seriously degraded over the last few weeks. In addition to May 25th’s 45 minute Datastore outage, applications have seen an increased latency and thus errors as a result of timeouts. As a rough estimate, we have seen Datastore latency increases of around 2.5x. Comparing April 1st to June 1st on the Status Site shows this trend. These issues in turn have caused problems with other parts of the App Engine service that also rely on the Datastore, such as Task Queues and the Admin Console.

There are a lot of different reasons for the problems over the last few weeks, but at the root of all of them is ultimately growing pains. Our service has grown 25% every two months for the past six months. To accommodate this growth, App Engine has expanded, both increasing our computing footprint and moving between Google datacenters to accommodate our growing size. Although we have moved and expanded, it hasn’t been enough-- and performance has suffered.

We want you to know we are taking the current problems with the Datastore very seriously. We have put other Datastore projects on hold to dedicate more people to accelerating improvements to Datastore performance, and to our datacenter configuration. We expect the Datastore may still have a few issues for the next two weeks, as we respond to the problem. After that point you should begin to see rapid improvements in performance, back to normal levels. Until that point, however, we believe Datastore performance may continue to be at a level that we feel is unacceptable.

So until performance has returned to a state we are proud of, and that you are satisfied with, your applications will not be charged for Datastore CPU costs effective on your May 31st bill. When we are convinced we have returned Datastore performance to a level we consider acceptable, we will give you a 7-day notification on this blog before we begin charging again (Note: Your Datastore CPU budget will still control your app’s CPU usage though you will not be charged for the Datastore CPU. So please don’t turn your budget to $0 during this period).

We hope this gives more clarity into the current issues you’ve seen with your application and we sincerely appreciate your patience as we work through them.

Thank you

The App Engine Team

Update: Clarified which Datastore charges will be disabled
